What Auricular Points Help Weight Loss?

Auricular is a microsystem of acupuncture in which the ears are used to treat health conditions that exist elsewhere in the body. Auricular acupuncture was developed in 1957 by French physician, Paul Nogier. Dr. Nogier created the concept that a map of the human body correlates with an illustration of an inverted fetus over the ear. After Nogier's concepts were published in a medical journal, his theory soon spread through Japan and China and eventually made their way into the United States. Although studies have since been conducted to verify the efficacy of auricular acupuncture, and stimulating specific auricular points may help with weight loss, there is insufficient evidence to support these claims.
Consult with a medical acupuncturist prior to using auricular for weight loss.
Shenmen Point:
Shenmen is a commonly used auricular acupuncture point that is located in the triangular fossa of your ear. It is considered the Chinese "heavenly gate" point and is employed to treat a variety of different health conditions in Chinese medicine. According to the Medical Acupuncture Journal, although this point is commonly used for pain relief, it can also help treat psychoemotional symptoms including fear, apprehension and anxiety. Shenmen is also employed to regulate the sympathetic nervous system. A study published in the 1998 issue of Australian Family Physician found that frequent stimulation of shenmen, in combination with the stomach auricular point, helped reduce the appetite of study subjects, which led to weight loss.
Stomach Point
When acupuncturists stimulate the auricular stomach point, it increases serotonin levels via the vagal nerve according to PubMed. This stimulation can help increase stomach smooth muscle tone, which leads to appetite suppression. According to the American Family Physician study previously mentioned, frequent stimulation of the auricular stomach point in conjunction with shenmen resulted in a significantly higher mean weight loss for study subjects compared to control subjects who did not receive auricular acupuncture.
Mouth Point
The auricular mouth point is another commonly used point for weight loss. A study performed in 2001 and published in Medical Acupuncture found that stimulation of the mouth auricular point in conjunction with 4 other points, including shenmen and stomach, resulted in higher mean weight loss compared with subjects who did not receive auricular. Obese female subjects received weekly auricular acupuncture combined with increased physical activity and a reduced-calorie diet. In addition to experiencing a higher level of weight loss, auricular subjects also reported a sensation of decreased appetite during the study.
Can Acupuncture Help With Weight Loss?
For years people have asked me, “Can acupuncture help you lose weight?” I have always responded with my comedic answer, “YES! It only takes one needle, between your lips so you can’t eat”. I have always meant that jokingly but it does illustrate a great point. Ultimately, no matter WHAT we do, we need to BURN more calories than we TAKE IN. There are no short cuts; there is no magic pill or magic herb. BUT, when Acupuncture is used in conjunction with a healthy and educated weight loss program the results can be extra-ordinary. I urge all of you to incorporate acupuncture and herbs into your Weight loss program.
How does Chinese medicine see weight gain and weight loss?
From a TCM perspective, the acupuncture points, foods and herbs that are chosen to assist with weight loss directly influence the function of the pancreas, stomach and liver systems to treat the root imbalances that are causing the weight gain.
What does all this mean from a Western perspective? Acupuncture as seen from a Western perspective has an effect on the nervous system, endocrine system, digestive system, food cravings, and metabolism. All of which can help to energize the body, maximize the absorption of nutrients, regulate elimination, control overeating, suppress the appetite, and reduce anxiety.
Acupuncture can maximize energy which in turn will maximize your resting BMI (Basal Metabolic Rate), which will burn more calories.
Acupuncture Points for Weight Loss
The beauty of acupuncture is that each treatment is catered to the needs of the individual patient. Acupuncture points on the body will be chosen for overall well being with the objective of increasing circulation of the blood and oxygen (stimulating the metabolism) and calming the nervous system.
Acupuncture points are also chosen based on the person. Such as a person that may eat due to sadness, point that stimulate the pineal gland (the “happy” gland that secretes serotonin) would be chosen. Or a person might eat due to anger or because of their PMS cycle. In which case we would chose points that help with each “manifestation” of over eating and also address the “root” cause of the imbalance.
We would typically treat people one or two times a week for a time of 2-4 months, or until we reached the patients goal weight.
Some more popular Ear Points
Acupuncture points on the ears have been found to be particularly effective for weight loss. This is in part due to the fact we can treat the para-sympathetic and limbic systems of the brain. Both parts are responsible for cravings, addictions, etc.
Shenmen: Important point for calming the mind and reducing stress
Small Intestine: Reinforces spleen, promotes digestion.
Mouth: Calming point used for smoking, over eating and hyperactive talking.
Hunger Point: Used to relieve hunger and control compulsive eating
Endocrine point: Moves liver Qi and aids in the function of the metabolism
Acupuncture when used as part of an overall weight loss program can be very helpful. Each person is unique and each program must be tailored for the individual. There are no “quick fixes” and each diet must be accompanied with exercise and education.

Can yoga help weight loss?
The most obvious physical benefits of yoga practice include loosening of muscles that have been tightened by inactivity, tension, and stress. Asana practice also increases the range of motion of joints, enhances flexibility, and can help correct postural problems that may have resulted from weight gain.
Any style of yoga helps tone, lengthen, and strengthen the muscles, which can contribute to the sculpting of the body, but not necessarily to weight loss. Remember that muscle is, after all, denser and therefore heavier than an equivalent volume of fat tissue.
According to yogic tradition, asana practice also gets the prana (vital energy) of the body moving, which can be helpful for you if weight gain, decreased energy, and sluggishness have appeared together. Yoga also offers psychological benefits. Weight gain often brings with it a great deal of harsh self-judgment. Through yoga, we can counteract this by creating a safe, positive environment to reconnect with our bodies and quiet the counterproductive messages that often arise in our minds. Reengaging in physical activity through asana practice can also foster a renewed sense of control over our lives, a quality that sometimes diminishes as one’s weight refuses to budge!
On a physiological level, certain styles of yoga could be more appropriate for those who have weight loss as a primary intention.
